Energy, enhancement, vitality, and stress relief in CPG products

Adaptogens are only one part of a much larger functional ingredient landscape. Caffeine, L-theanine, creatine, saffron, glycine and niacinamide, at doses and in formats that hold up in a finished product.

In our recent articles, we have looked at adaptogens such as cordyceps, reishi, rhodiola, eleuthero, Panax ginseng, and holy basil and the growing interest in using these ingredients in modern products.

But adaptogens are only one part of a much larger functional ingredient landscape.

For companies developing consumer packaged goods (CPG), the opportunity extends into ingredients that can support specific consumer needs around energy, mental focus, physical performance, recovery, mood, stress relief, cognitive performance, and even visible vitality.

This is where product development needs to become more precise.

Consumers use functional products to meet distinct daily needs: feeling alert during a long commute, staying focused through cognitively demanding work, performing in training, recovering after a short night of sleep, or looking more refreshed after travel.

These needs should not be approached with a single, catch-all “energy” formula.

The best products match a clearly defined consumer occasion with ingredients that can be delivered at meaningful levels, remain stable in the chosen format, and support a responsible, substantiated claim.

A strong ingredient platform can be organized around five related benefit spaces: immediate activation, calm concentration, physical performance, recovery and mood, and visible vitality.

The essential development principle is simple: use one or two leading actives at practical doses rather than a long ingredient list where none is present at a level connected to human evidence.

Immediate energy and calm focus

Caffeine remains the most established ingredient for acute alertness. By antagonizing adenosine receptors, it reduces perceived fatigue and can improve wakefulness and performance during mentally or physically demanding tasks.

A practical serving range for functional products is roughly 50 to 200 mg. At the lower end, caffeine can suit a sparkling focus beverage, supplement gum, chew, or commuter-oriented powder. Higher levels may better fit adult sports and performance products.

Caffeine is technically flexible, but it needs careful product design. Its bitterness must be masked, total daily exposure should be considered, and late-day products should account for the potential effect on sleep.

A clear caffeine declaration and simple serving guidance are essential, particularly in categories where consumers may also use coffee, energy drinks, or pre-workout supplements.

L-theanine and caffeine

L-theanine is a particularly useful partner for caffeine. It can help create a calmer concentration profile without changing the product into a sedative.

Literature evidence

In a controlled human study, 100 mg L-theanine combined with 50 mg caffeine improved the speed and accuracy of attention switching and reduced susceptibility to distraction. A two-piece gum or a 250 to 355 mL beverage can deliver 50 mg caffeine and 100 mg L-theanine comfortably.

This pairing offers a sound starting point for a “calm focus” proposition.

Gum requires attention to active distribution, release during chewing, and bitterness masking. Beverages require flavor work, pH control, and clarity on whether the product will be marketed as a conventional food or dietary supplement.

In either format, claims should remain specific: support alertness and focus during mentally demanding tasks rather than promise unlimited productivity or treatment of fatigue.

Performance and sustained vitality

Creatine monohydrate

Creatine monohydrate is one of the most compelling ingredients available for a performance platform.

It supports the phosphocreatine system, which helps regenerate ATP, the primary energy currency used by cells, during repeated short-duration, high-intensity activity.

A practical daily range is 3 to 5 g. A 3 g daily serving also aligns with the European Union condition associated with the authorized creatine claim for improved physical performance during successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise.

The key challenge for creatine is stability.

It is better suited to dry formats because acidic liquids and high temperatures can accelerate conversion toward creatinine. Dry stick packs, tubs, sachets, and dual-chamber packaging are therefore better choices than a conventional acidic, shelf-stable ready-to-drink product.

A dry performance stick can deliver 3 g creatine monohydrate while keeping the ingredient protected until the point of use.

This is an important formulation consideration: the science supporting an ingredient is only part of the equation. The ingredient must also remain stable and effective in the finished product.

Magnesium

Magnesium can strengthen a performance-vitality platform because it is an essential cofactor in energy metabolism and neuromuscular function.

A typical product can provide 100 to 300 mg elemental magnesium, depending on the target consumer, serving size, and regional requirements.

Salt selection is important. Solubility, metallic taste, elemental contribution, and gastrointestinal tolerance vary by magnesium source.

A nutrient-support message is more defensible than a broad claim that magnesium eliminates stress.

Taurine

Taurine is a useful companion in sports, hydration, and endurance products.

It is water soluble and often used at 1 to 3 g per serving. Human evidence suggests a modest endurance benefit, although findings are heterogeneous.

Taurine can reinforce a hydration or performance narrative, but it should not carry an exaggerated “limitless energy” claim.

Taste masking and an appropriate regulatory path are important for products containing gram-level servings.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10, commonly known as CoQ10, adds a premium vitality and antioxidant dimension.

As a mitochondrial electron-transfer cofactor, it has a strong mechanistic story, though the evidence for generalized fatigue and exercise-performance claims is more limited.

Oral products commonly use 100 to 300 mg per day.

CoQ10 is poorly water soluble and vulnerable to oxidation and light, so it is best suited to softgels, lipid-based powders, emulsions, or specialized delivery systems.

In topical products, it should be placed in the oil phase and protected with appropriate antioxidants and opaque, airless packaging.

Recovery, relaxation, and mood

Energy and vitality are not always about stimulation. Recovery and relaxation can be equally important parts of how a consumer feels and performs the following day.

Saffron extract

Saffron extract is a premium ingredient for emotional well-being and mood support.

Modern standardized-extract studies often use 28 to 30 mg per day, a small dose that works well in capsules, lozenges, supplement shots, and stick packs.

The formulation advantage is the low required serving size.

The development challenge is raw-material quality. Saffron is costly, susceptible to adulteration, and sensitive to light, oxidation, and harsh processing.

A quality specification should define standardized markers and include robust identity testing.

Glycine

Glycine is better understood as a recovery ingredient than a stimulant.

A 3 g bedtime serving has been studied in sleep-restriction settings, where it was associated with reduced fatigue and sleepiness the following day.

Its mild sweetness makes it unusually practical for an evening drink mix, powder stick, or lozenge.

Glycine products should be positioned around wind-down routines, overnight recovery, and next-day readiness.

In the United States, the legal basis for conventional-food use should be evaluated carefully; a dietary-supplement format may be more straightforward.

Lemon balm

Lemon balm is well suited to evening calm products.

Standardized extracts in the 300 to 600 mg range have shown calming signals in human research, though higher levels may reduce alertness.

It is therefore a natural fit for nighttime teas, gummies, lozenges, powders, and dissolvable tablets.

A formula should protect the botanical’s sensory qualities and test for stability of the relevant marker compounds.

GABA

GABA can be included as a supporting ingredient in relaxation-oriented products, particularly in powders, capsules, or lozenges.

Its evidence base for stress and sleep is limited, so it should not serve as the sole clinical anchor for a formula.

It works better as one component of an evening ritual product built around a coherent consumer experience, taste profile, and moderate claim language.

Premium cognition and visible vitality

The functional ingredient opportunity also extends beyond traditional concepts of physical energy. Cognitive performance and even the visible appearance of vitality create additional areas for product development.

Citicoline

Citicoline offers a premium attention and cognitive-performance ingredient at approximately 250 to 500 mg per day.

It can be used in shots, capsules, powders, and gum, and it pairs naturally with caffeine in a focused-work or gaming concept.

Evidence from combination-product studies should be described with care. Results for a beverage containing several active ingredients do not automatically establish that citicoline alone produced every outcome.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is another premium option for cognition and stress-response support.

Typical finished-product levels range from 100 to 400 mg per day.

Its human evidence is mixed, but it can provide differentiation in a high-value cognitive formula.

Since it is a phospholipid, oxidation control is essential.

Product teams should also select the source intentionally. Soy-, sunflower-, and marine-derived materials can differ in allergen implications, labeling, consumer perception, and supply-chain requirements.

Niacinamide and visible vitality

Niacinamide is the leading visible-vitality active for beauty and personal-care products.

It is highly relevant to skin-barrier function and can support claims related to radiance, uneven tone, dullness, and refreshed-looking skin.

A 2 to 5% use level is practical in serums, creams, lotions, and scalp products.

Literature evidence

In a clinical split-face study, 5% topical niacinamide used twice daily for 12 weeks improved fine lines, hyperpigmentation, blotchiness, sallowness, and elasticity.

An effective “awake skin” serum can use 5% niacinamide with 0.3% caffeine, panthenol, glycerin, and a pH around 5.5 to 6.0.

Niacinamide supplies the evidence-led skin-benefit foundation, while caffeine adds a familiar refreshed-skin cue.

A premium extension can add CoQ10 at about 0.1% in a protected oil phase.

Topical claims should remain focused on visible appearance, skin feel, and sensory experience rather than systemic energy or stress physiology.

From functional ingredients to CPG product platforms

The opportunity is not to combine every promising ingredient into a single formulation.

A clearer CPG portfolio can be built around distinct consumer needs and product platforms.

Six platforms, six occasions

  • Calm focus. 50 mg caffeine plus 100 mg L-theanine in supplement gum, a powder stick, or a sparkling beverage.
  • Performance vitality. 3 g creatine monohydrate, 1 g taurine, and magnesium supplying about 100 mg elemental magnesium in a dry stick pack.
  • Evening recovery. 3 g glycine with lemon balm in a flavored powder, lozenge, or gummy.
  • Premium mood. 28 mg standardized saffron extract in a capsule, shot, or lozenge.
  • Cognitive performance. Citicoline, potentially supported by caffeine or phosphatidylserine, in a premium shot, gum, or powder.
  • Visible vitality. A 5% niacinamide serum, with caffeine as a refreshed-appearance cue and CoQ10 as a premium cream extension.

The opportunity beyond adaptogens

Adaptogens have helped expand consumer interest in functional ingredients and introduced a broader audience to products developed around energy, stress, focus, performance, and well-being.

But they represent only one area of functional product development.

As we move beyond adaptogens, the opportunity becomes much broader and, from a formulation perspective, much more interesting.

The most credible functional products connect consumer benefit, clinical dose, physical chemistry, package design, and claim language.

A stable formula at a token dose has little substantiation value. Conversely, an evidence-aligned dose is not commercially useful if it is unstable, unpleasant, or incompatible with the intended product category.

The strongest products solve all of those problems at once.

For CPG companies, that is ultimately the opportunity: not simply identifying the next popular ingredient, but understanding which ingredient, at what dose, in what format, for which consumer need, and supported by what evidence.

That is where ingredient science becomes meaningful product innovation.
